Atawhai Mercy Assisi is situated in 3 acres of park like grounds with mature trees and 500 rose bushes. Atawhai Mercy Assisi rest home has 40 beds including two flats for frail priests of the diocese.
The facility opened in 1971 as Assisi Home and Hospital, built on three acres of donated rural land in Matangi, just 10 minutes from the centre of Hamilton. It is owned by Nga Whaea Atawhai o Aotearoa Sisters of Mercy New Zealand who’s Ministries Trust Tiaki Manatū provides governance via its Mercy Healthcare Board. Sister Jocelyn Wilson currently serves as coordinator of the facility’s Pastoral Care team. Living in retirement with her in community is Sister Paulinus Karl, who now serves as a volunteer. Sisters Judith Leydon and Patricia Rowe are directors on the Mercy Healthcare Board.
The hospital has 46 single rooms, most with ensuite access. All rooms have views across the extensive grounds and surrounding countryside or pleasant courtyards.
