We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us – Catherine McAuley
Many of our Mercy Women will begin their annual summer break in the next few weeks. The summer holidays provide a well-deserved rest at years end and provide the opportunity to enjoy valuable space in our lives.
Many of us might take some time to do some volunteering or part time work. Even better if you can combine both these options and explore potential career opportunities while doing good. Many charities are constantly on the look out for hard working and willing volunteers that want to take on a challenge, particularly over the Christmas period. That challenge might even help you decide on your career path post school. For instance, you might be able to secure a voluntary role that allows you to explore a range of career roles to help you make future choices – writing, caring, administration or graphic design.
If you don’t fancy volunteering, there’s always the chance to start some research into potential career or study options post school. Next year will be here before you know it! Take the time to check out tertiary education or trade training opportunities – who delivers the type of training you are looking for?
You might also like to use this time to think about things you can do within your own neighbourhood to make a difference. Perhaps you could be the catalyst for drawing your community together to achieve change – maybe set up a local community stream care group. You will be surprised how many people you get to meet and the potential doors an activity like this might open.
It’s always amazing how many places there are in our city or town that we have never visited or know little about. Holidays are a great time to go exploring your own home town – particularly if you are on a “staycation”. Check out the tourist guides for your place and pick out the places you would like to visit. For those of you in Christchurch, the city is an ever changing world as the rebuild starts to near completion. Its well worth a wander!
Maybe you want to learn something new that is not connected to school. Holidays are a great time to do a course. There are lots of on-line learning options now, so you can learn new things from your own home. All you need is a computer and internet connection combined with some time and energy.
Take time out for peaceful pursuits. Our lives are so busy during the year we sometimes forget the important things. Holidays are a great time for us to think and reconnect with joys in our life. There is no better place to do that than in the house of God. Being in a conversation with God is a peaceful experience. Enjoy it!
